The small beach oasis of Playa Negra is a popular tourist spot in Costa Rica. Found in the Guanacaste region on the Pacific Coast, the lovely Playa Negra offers many unique and interesting features. 1. Surfer’s Paradise
Like many other spots along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, Playa Negra is a haven for surfers. Waves roll on by year round. Morning, noon, and night you can spot surfers catching waves. Take a lesson and go catch one too!
2. Big Screen Fame
Playa Negra has had its moment in the Hollywood spotlight. Endless Summer 2 with Bruce Brown put Playa Negra on the tourist map in the mid-1990s. Of course, they highlighted the surfing culture.
3. Dark Sand
Most of the popular beach areas in Costa Rica offer beautiful white sand beaches. Playa Negra, on the other hand, has dark sand. The contrast between the darker sand and the crystal blue water is stunning.
4. Small Dirt Roads
Other popular beach towns in Guanacaste, like Tamarindo or Flamingo, have built up road systems that allow for basically any car to reach them with ease. Playa Negra, on the other hand, still has small dirt roads leading into the area. Remember 4-wheel drives makes the trek much easier.
5. Small And Quiet
Compared to the hustle and bustle of Tamarindo under an hour away, Playa Negra offers a smaller and quieter version of a similar environment. Only a few hundred residents live there, and while tourists love the area, it is never quite as busy as other locations.
6. Close Proximity
Playa Negra’s location is one of the many reasons it is an ideal vacation spot. It is close not only to Tamarindo, but it is also close to Playa Avellanas, Marino Las Baulas National Park and Ostional Wildlife Refuge.
7. Los Pargos
Where Playa Tamarindo is located in similarly named Tamarindo and Playa Flamingo is located in Flamingo, Playa Negra is located in the town of Los Pargos, a Costa Rican village quite typical of the area.
8. World Cuisine
For the area being small, you might be surprised at the vast variety of cuisine found near Playa Negra. One popular spot is actually Peruvian – Café Playa Negra. Of course, you can also find delicious local cuisine along with vegetarian and gluten-free options.
