Where is the best place in Costa Rica to buy?
Just starting your search for a property in Costa Rica?
First step is to narrow your search down geographically. Although Costa Rica is a small country there are vastly different options. First decision- beach, countryside or city?
San Jose is the capital and a bussling lively area. I lived there for 12 years and really enjoyed my time. There are plenty of expats that live there, but you will need to brush up on your Spanish.
There are gorgeous countryside locations, like La Fortuna or Atenas. These areas have a lower cost base and lower cost of living. They are quiet and peaceful and have good expat communities.
Personally I am a beach person, that is why I moved to Costa Rica. There are 2 coasts, Carribean and Pacific. The Carribean side is much cheaper, but the infrastructure is limited (roads, internet, cel phone coverage) and so it is for the more adventurous.
The Pacific coast is where the well known beach towns of Tamarindo, Coco, Jaco,, Dominical and Manuel Antonio are located and most expats live in one of these towns. Tamarindo is my favourite and is where i chose to call home. Great weather, 45 minute transit to the Liberia International airport and gorgeous beaches. Community feel and good friends is what it is all about for me, and Tamarindo has a good critical mass of like minded people.
Jaco is a bussling, popular wild town with a seedy reputation, very popular with weekend vacationers from San Jose. Manuel Antonio is spectacular, with steep hillsides affording spectacular views. Domical less developed but is growing fast due to new road improvements. Coco is close to the Four Seasons resort and is developing fast, beaches are darker.
Best thing to do is plan a trip to Costa Rica, hire a car and do a road trip. Let our concierge department help you plan it.
