The Importance of Attitude
Last weekend when Laurel and I were leaving the Multiplaza in Escazu(which by the way is wonderful shopping experience) I remembered that I needed a new battery for my phone. As luck would have it there was a very small shop right in front of us that sold phones and a few accessories.
We entered the shop to the greeting of a young man with a friendly smile and between our limited Spanish and his English we managed to communicate quite well. I think that it is true that communication is 80% -90% non-verbal!
Anyway, I handed him my phone and then the skillful concerto began. He was amazing as he quickly performed various activities and functions as he cleaned the phone and replace the battery as well as the cover. On the surface this may appear to be no big deal but it struck us how wonderful it felt to have interaction with someone who was so seemingly at peace with himself and joyful in his work.
Much has been written about the importance of attitude and it’s not only true but jumps out at you when you are having the experience.
I believe our team makes this effort each day and we are most certainly not always successful. I do know that when we are, magic happens and you can feel the difference. Meeting the challenges of working in Real Estate in a foreign country has its difficulties for buyers, sellers, brokers, attorneys and virtually everyone in the chain.
It feels so nice to be recognized for our efforts (see the testimonial letter below). It makes me feel like driving 3 ½ hours back to the mall and thanking the guy with the nice smile and skilled hands for how he does his job, for his wonderful attitude and the positive effect it has on others.

Laurel and Tony,
The both of you were fantastic with us throughout the property search and purchase process. As we had mentioned, two other attempts to find thorough, attentive, responsive agents to work with in Tamarindo were failures. I expect that we are more work to deal with than many others as we asked a lot of thorough and analytical questions and expected responses to all of them. You two never failed to deliver. The organization and execution of our condo shopping trip in January was excellent and the fact that you two devoted 2 full days to us, around our schedule, to get this deal done was key to our success. The selection of properties that Laurel planned out, including a few places above and below our target zone helped us to refine our interests. We truly appreciated your interest in our success. This could easily have been very stressful for us, and yet, it wasn’t. Thank you very much.
As a side note, when we walked into the Coldwell Banker office randomly with no appointment in November had we not found your office staff patient and accommodating from the start we would have simply walked on to the next agency. Your staff deserves special mention for getting us interested in the agency to begin with.
We will give you some advance notice before we make our first trip down so that we can plan to get together for lunch or dinner. We are tentatively planning on somewhere in the last 2 weeks of May, as soon as our son gets out of school for the summer.
Sincerely,
Dan Batliner
