Three Reasons You Should Consider Costa Rica
Forbes magazine, CNBC, and International Living: three heavyweights of international opinion recently ranked Costa Rica top amongst options for retiring abroad, an assertion Costa Rica has held for a long time. In fact, Costa Rica has been a retirement destination longer than most retirement “hot spots” have been, which begs the question... why?
Maybe it should beg the question “why would anyone consider new places over tried and true?” At the end of the day there are three good reasons why you should pick Costa Rica real estate over other countries: stable government, safety, and diversity.
Stable government
Costa Rica is a democratic nation, with a president elected by a popular vote. The people have chance to vote for a new president every four-years, which has been the case by the will of the people since '50's. Not only are the people of Costa Rica happy with the system they have in place (the happiest people on Earth as reported by CNN) they have no military through which to stage a military coop, even if they wanted to. The military was disbanded in 1947 in favor of putting money into education. This fiscal move has become a symbol of peace, a reason to travel to Costa Rica for many, and a reason to invest. In fact the tourism dollars flooding the Costa Rican economy are so good it's the strongest of all Central American nations, including Guatemala. Stable government, and a stable economy, means low crime rates.
Safety
Crime happens. Everywhere. Costa Rica, however, ranks lowest in Central American homicide rates. In fact Costa Rica's violent crime rates are on balance with world averages. On the actual streets of Costa Rica one is left to wonder where this reported crime is happening? Costa Ricans, generally speaking, are peaceful and giving people. When they open their homes to you, as a guest you are treated like royalty, stuffed with food and drink until you surrender. That's not to say that Ticos are no fun–evident during the first world cup game where cheers from the streets of Costa Rica rose like the roar of dinosaurs from the jungle. It was amazing. But the celebration of Costa Ricans rarely leads to violence, which is more than can be said for the towns many of us are from. In the world of Tamarindo real estate there aren't bad or good neighborhoods. We have “good” and “even better” opportunities.
Diversity
Pound for pound, covering only .03% of the Earth's surface, but representing 6% of the Earth's biodiversity, Costa Rica is the most biologically diverse country on the planet. It's no surprise that the range of climates matches that diversity, as does the mix of people. Towns like Tamarindo are not only magnets for culture, the very people of Costa Rica are rich in diversity, including heritages native to the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa. There is no one look to the face of a Tico, and while there may be one culture of peace and happiness, it's painted with broad-strokes and a creative-hand. From the reggae-colors of the caribbean, through misty-mountain cloud forests, down to the balmy beaches of the Gold Coast, there is likely a corner of Costa Rica that fits any person's lifestyle.
Considering all the options, no place puts expats as close to home, without worrying about safety, or the security of government. It's no wonder why so many authorities on travel keep talking about Costa Rica, why so many people keep traveling to her shores, and why you have read this whole article. Who wouldn't want to invest in the happiest place on earth?
